Best of 2007

December 29, 2007Posted by Chris Tingom

It has been a good year on Arizona Coffee. Here are some of my favorite posts and discussions from the year gone by. Also, a big thank you to all of the people who contribute to this blog — both sponsors, writers, and those who submit tips by email.

January

  • Cabin Coffee Espresso — Definitely one of the best coffee shops in Arizona and the one serving excellent food. Don’t let the name fool you, this is an upscale cabin look that is sure to delight.
  • Barista Jam Photo Wrapup — It is hard to believe that the Barista Jam was held in January. A year goes by quickly and people come and go.

February

March

April

May

  • Smoking Ban — The smoking ban takes effect across AZ and one local coffee shop offers some commentary to the newspaper.
  • Royalty and Trolls — We had some bad behavior on the web site at times, and I used these icons to keep everyone in check.
  • Arizona by the Numbers — I should probably do a rehash of this post in 2008 to update the numbers.

June

July

August

September

  1. Helvetica Mug — A cool coffee mug for font geeks.
  2. Matador Grand Opening Party — Video and photos from the Matador Party in Phoenix this year.

October

November

  • New Owner: Coffee Plantation — Readers pitch in with ideas for the new owner of Coffee Plantation on how it can be improved.
  • First time here? — After the Arizona Coffee interview was published in the newspaper, this post presented first time visitors with an overview of the site.

December

That’s it! Thanks again for another great year! Here’s to 2008! If you are curious, here is the Best of 2006 post.

Boost Sales: Have a Starbucks Next Door?

December 28, 2007Posted by Chris Tingom

Could it be that having a Starbucks near independent coffeehouses actually helps boost sales?

Hyman’s new neighbor boosted his sales so much that he decided to turn the tactic around and start targeting Starbucks. “We bought a Chinese restaurant right next to one of their stores and converted it, and by God, it was doing $1 million a year right away,” he said.

Goals for 2008

December 27, 2007Posted by Chris Tingom

This has been a year of change on Arizona Coffee. In all of that, one thing remains consistent. The coffee scene in Arizona is maturing. There’s still a long ways to go however and in 2008 I have the following 3 goals for this web site.

  1. Increase efforts to attract readers, especially consumers of coffee. This will help us balance our strong showing of industry professionals. This means getting posters, business cards, and other collateral pieces in the hands of coffee shops.
  2. Start a Readers Voice Awards Program. This will be a way for Arizona Coffee to get both press attention on an annual basis and award coffee shops in Arizona for excellence. We’ll create several categories and readers will have a chance to vote online. Example categories will include: “Best Latte,” “Best Mocha,” “Best Latte Art,” and others. The votes will be tallied and certificates presented to each coffee house which will be framed for display.
  3. Solid Content: More reviews, more interviews, more focus on readers and building community. It’s easy to look at the archives and say “it’s all been done” but the truth is harder: It’s all about the coffee and the people NOW. I’m hoping to interview more baristas and those influencing coffee in AZ (especially those with significant experience).

What would you like to see on Arizona Coffee in 2008?

Human Bean Plans 25 Drive Thru’s in Valley

December 22, 2007Posted by Chris Tingom

I was reading in the newspaper and see that The Human Bean is going to open a bunch of new drive thru’s in the valley. The next one will be in Mesa.

Human Bean “will be a positive impact,” said Patrick Murphy, senior Town Center development specialist. Renovating a vacant building conveys an image of vitality, he said.

Human Bean plans to open 25 drive-through coffeehouses in the Valley. The first two are in south Chandler and northwest Phoenix. Most franchises throughout the West are small buildings in parking lots with drive-through windows on both sides.

Willow House in Newspaper

December 22, 2007Posted by Chris Tingom

The Willow House has re opened and was featured in the newspaper.

Other regulars have not been deterred, wanting to see the new shop, in a remodeled house with wood floors, brightly colored walls and custom-made steel flowers on the windows.

“I like the new spot. I think it’s a nicer building,” said Carlos Villegas, a 26-year-old customer who’s been a regular for about 12 years, since he was in high school.

“We were just happy that the Willow House wasn’t closing.”

The Ultimate Coffee Cup

The Ultimate Coffee Cup. Rather odd shaped, but I bet it would work well.

Thanks to Tomas for sending it over. He found it on Jason Duncan’s blog.

Tea

December 11, 2007Posted by Chris Tingom

I don’t know very much about tea, but I know there are several tea houses in Phoenix and several coffee shops that also try to serve tea. As such, I thought it would be important to feature this video which helps to explain the variations in tea and shows several examples of quality tea from Upton.

Closed: Soma Express

December 5, 2007Posted by Chris Tingom

I stopped at Soma Express (40th St. and Camelback Rd.) this morning to discover they were closed. The sign on the window indicated it was due to not enough business. The location on Tatum and Shea is still open.
