My name is Shawn and i just opened a new cafe / coffee shop named Rhino Caffe in Queen Creek. We opened in the space that was previously the Daily Buzz. I wanted to let you know about our Grand Opening and also put the word out that we are looking for an experienced barista to work with us.
I know this is a kinda last minute but we are having our ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday the 30th of April at 11:00am. If you can, please stop by.

The Twist appears to be a direct competitor to the Handpresso (which I have tried, but not gotten around to posting my video with the horrible results).
From the description it sounds like it uses a co2 gas cartridge and either ESE pods or fresh ground coffee. I like that, as the Handpresso didn’t work with coffee grounds (I tried).
Press Coffee has announced it will be hosting its 2nd Latte Art Throwdown on May 3rd at 7 pm. Free to watch, and a small entry fee (that goes towards the prize) to compete.
More details to follow! To participate in the contest (pro or hobby baristas encouraged) please RSVP with Press Coffee at (480) 419-6221. You can also email brian@presscfw.com to participate. Official rules, entry fee, and judging information will be posted prior to the event. The contest will begin promptly at 7 pm. To warm up on the machine, feel free to arrive early.
Fair Trade Cafe, 1020 N. 1st Ave, is having it’s ‘Customer Appreciation Day’ celebration this Saturday, 4/25. We’ll be there with the 5lb San Franciscan doing roasting demos on the hour from 1-3 PM, and we’re bringing some swag for the raffles.
I’m planning to attend around 12:30 pm so if you’re there, say hello.

Phoenix will soon have a new coffee shop in the downtown area. Thrive Coworking will be opening later this summer. The exact location isn’t decided yet, but the owners say it will be between Van Buren and Jefferson within walking distance from the light rail.
To me, Thrive is a direct answer to the problem at Lux. If you’ve been to Lux recently during the work week, you’ve no doubt noticed all of the people working on laptops. Nearly every seat is occupied by a laptop toting workaholic.
Thrive, founded by Tyson Crosbie is going to have a number of desks for rent in the space, meaning that people will have a chance to rent a dedicated spot inside the coffee shop. If you aren’t familiar with the concept of coworking, you should read up on it. There are a number of places in Arizona offering coworking.
Thrive will consist of 15 dedicated work spaces with access to private meeting/conference rooms and a coffee shop. As a freelancer, Thrive will benefit you and your business through collaboration, inspiration and motivation that are inherent from participating in a coworking environment.
You can follow ThriveCo on Twitter where Tyson has been answering questions. Estimated opening is no later than this September.
CupZ Coffee which used to have 3 locations valley wide now has only one. The store in Scottsdale closed about 2 years ago (it actually changed ownership, and name). And I’ve just heard that the location in Gilbert has also closed.
The Tempe shop is the only remaining shop. The CupZ web site says they’re opening more locations in 2009. That sounds interesting.
Hey Arizona: The jobs section of this site sure looks empty. If you’re hiring at the moment, or thinking about hiring soon, send me your job listings and I’ll put them on the site.
I’m very pleased to announce that Ground Control Coffee is the newest sponsor on Arizona Coffee. You can visit them at groundxcontrol.com or visit their shop in Goodyear.

Consider this a “mega post” with photos from the most recent latte art throwdown at Ground Control Coffee. The event was a huge success. There were 8 people competing and 3 judges (Todd Welfelt, Jody, and myself). Tara from Ground Control was scorekeeper and coordinated everything.
On my recent trip to Ground Control for the Latte Art Throwdown I took some photos of the shop and wanted to share them with you all. It had been 2 years since my first trip, far too long!
Most notable:
Huge wine bar, if you’re into wine / beer stop in some evening for a treat.
Massive conference table that seats at least 16. Available for reservation for events.
They roast a lot of coffee and have huge stacks of green beans in the warehouse area.
The coffee bar is an island in the middle of the main room and is shaped like a coffee bean.
Equipment: 4 group LaMarzocco LB 80 and a swift grinder.
Very comfortable chairs and lots of them.

David Anderson was one of the earliest readers of Arizona Coffee 4 years ago, and his company roasts coffee for coffee shops, restaurants, and for consumer sales. C3 also provides equipment sales and repair as well as coffee consulting. I visited C3 in February and wrote up a full profile here.
