Best of 2009

December 31, 2009Posted by Chris Tingom

Look at that. Another year has flown by and here we are on the cusp of a 2010. March will mark five full years of publishing Arizona Coffee, too.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves — I want to talk about this year. I posted 220 “posts” on this site, about 40 less than the previous year. I felt like the quality of posts increased, with more coverage about coffee shops, with excellent debate on many.

So without further ado, here’s the best posts from this year:

January

February

March

April

May

June

July

August

  • No Laptops! — Should laptops be allowed in coffee shops? Interesting discussion.

September

October

November

December

Goals for 2010:

  1. I’d like to do more interviews (both written and on video) with local baristas, shop owners, and roasters. If you are interested let me know. I’ll come out to visit you and take video or notes (or email you questions).
  2. I’m also looking forward to finally getting the “Readers Choice Awards” off the ground. It’s been a work in progress, but I think 2010 will be the year it happens.
  3. I’d like to start separating photo essays from critiques. I have tons of photos waiting in the hopper, but not enough content to go along with them.
  4. I’d like to improve the Arizona Coffee Map (out dated at this point).
  5. I’m thinking about starting a Wiki for storing data about shops, much like CrunchBase. This is currently being held up because I can’t find a Wiki I like.
  6. Stickers, everywhere.

In case you are curious, you can browse my “Best of” posts from previous years: 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.

Lastly, there are many people to thank, but most importantly the coffee shops for producing great coffee, the baristas and owners that work there, and the coffee roasters who source and roast coffee. Thank you to my sponsors, who make this site possible.

New Sponsor: Service Associates

December 31, 2009Posted by Chris Tingom

I am extremely pleased to announce the newest sponsor of Arizona Coffee: Service Associates. The company’s slogan says what they do: Beverage Equipment Specialists.

beverage service arizona nevada

Founded in 1988 in Phoenix, AZ, the company services customers in Arizona and Nevada. And they really are specialists. They list over 40 different equipment manufacturers and service dozens of types of equipment.

Thank you to Service Associates for their support in 2010!

Coffee and Travel

December 30, 2009Posted by Chris Tingom

WanderingJustin.com has an interesting post about his challenges finding good coffee when traveling.

It made me think about all of the sites I’ve stumbled across that are about coffee. And frankly there aren’t many. Why is that? You’d think there would be more sites like this one, but in other states.

I know about a few: CoffeeRatings.com does a good job rating shops in San Francisco, and Milwaukee Specialty Coffee covers coffee in Wisconsin (and beyond), and Coffee City does a good job covering Seattle. A few other places to look are CupofNYC.com (for New York City), and the Forums on CoffeeGeek allow messages by country and state. If you happen to be visiting Denver, check out the infrequently updated blog MileHighBuzz.com. There’s a map on EspressoMap.com, and a great site for Melbourne, and some old posts about Portland. If you’re Swedish, give Kaffesnobben a try. In Vancouver, the (infrequently updated) Vancouver Coffee site may help you find a good cup.

There are other places you can find coffee reviews, for example try searching on Yelp or Barista Exchange. Lastly, the Arizona Coffee Forum is a great place to ask fellow coffee fans about coffee shops in other states. Numerous times I’ve mentioned I’m visiting a city and received suggestions.

What are YOUR favorite coffee shops out of state?

A great new site for showcasing your latte art skills, is the Art in My Coffee site. I see there are already a few submissions from Arizona.

2010 Predictions

December 29, 2009Posted by Chris Tingom

I don’t normally predict stuff, but here goes:

Coffee shops will begin to eye Scottsdale, rather than downtown Phoenix. Right now Scottsdale is an untapped market! We’ve got Village Coffee, Coffee Plantation, and Sola Coffee Bar, and that’s basically it besides some chains.

The number of new shops in downtown Phoenix will level out (1-2 more, at most). In 2011 one or two will abandon downtown. There are a lot of shops downtown at the moment, and I wonder if it is becoming too saturated.

Cartel will continue to expand, opening one additional shop… in Tempe.

More web and social media. Coffee shops and coffee roasters will begin to realize how important an online presence is to business. They’ll start interacting with customers on Twitter and Facebook.

The coffee will keep getting better. More shops will begin roasting their own coffee, and educating their customers about it. The divide between average coffee shops and great shops will become even greater, though.

Coffee Plantation will close, for good. They only have two locations remaining, and I predict that the shopping centers refuse to renew their leases knowing they can get a stronger coffee brand. I’d be pleasantly surprised if the coffee improved, but I’ve been wishing for years.

These are easy predictions to make. What are YOUR predictions for 2010?

Arizona by the Numbers, Redux

December 28, 2009Posted by Chris Tingom

136

The number of independent coffee shops in Arizona, not including kiosks, carts, or restaurants.

422

The number of chain owned coffee shops in Arizona (two or more shops).

37

The number of coffee roasters in Arizona.

23

The number of coffee roasters in the greater Phoenix area.

7

The number of coffee roasters in Tucson and Southern Arizona.

7

The number of coffee roasters in Northern Arizona.

370

The number of Starbucks stores in Arizona, estimated using the Starbucks store locator (includes locations inside grocery stores).

1,214

The number of blog posts on Arizona Coffee.

4,806

The number of forum posts.

4,479

The number of reader comments that have been left on Arizona Coffee.

58

Number of months Arizona Coffee has been published, or 4.8 years.

544

Number of coffee shops in AZ, including chains, but not restaurants, as estimated by Arizona Coffee.

4,015

Number of followers on the Arizona Coffee Twitter account. Only 33 coffee shops are on Twitter, though.

If you are interested in this subject, I wrote a similar post in 2007.

Some estimates are much higher for the total number of independent shops, and if you count kiosks, carts, and restaurants that serve coffee the number is most likely 2,000, if not more.

Coffee Chains in Arizona

December 27, 2009Posted by Chris Tingom

In 2006 I prepared a list of coffee chains in Arizona. Defining a coffee chain is difficult. Is it two shops? Three, or more? I chose two since that increases the list significantly.

For a grand total of 426. If you know of any chains I may have missed, or have other corrections, please leave a comment or send me a note.

Ketchup Week! The one week in each year when you can catch up!

December 26, 2009Posted by Chris Tingom

Ketchup WeekOne of my many side projects is the annual Ketchup Week! The idea is that the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is often distraction free (hopefully!) and less busy than usual (lots of people take time off).

So have a great Ketchup Week! Here’s hoping you accomplish a lot!

New coffee species discovered this year

December 24, 2009Posted by Chris Tingom

From the BBC:

Seven wild coffee species also feature on the list of new species, most of which were discovered in the mountains of northern Madagascar.

Two of the plants – Coffea ambongensis and Coffea boinensis – have the largest seeds of any coffee species, whose “beans” are more than twice the size of Arabica coffee (Coffea arabica), the main species used in commercial coffee production.

Looking for a few awesome sponsors

December 22, 2009Posted by Chris Tingom

It’s almost the end of the year — it’s been an interesting year with budgets slashed and spending way down. I’d like to sell some additional advertisements before the new year.

Why Arizona Coffee is a good choice

  • 81% of readers live in Phoenix, AZ
  • 86% make their own coffee at home/work
  • 30% of readers are in the coffee business
  • Lots of great content about coffee house culture in AZ
  • Advertisements appear on the right sidebar on every page of this site (except the forum) and are randomly sorted

More data from the Arizona Coffee 2009 Reader Survey.

How to confirm your spot

Email me at coffee@arizonacoffee.com and I will send you payment information. I accept checks, and PayPal (and you can use a credit card on PayPal). You can pay now and send me your ad artwork later (in case you need to have an ad designed). Or you may phone me at: (602) 538-9120.

Don’t miss this opportunity to save on the price. I’ve never sold ads for this price before, and likely won’t again. Payment must be received before the end of the year to secure this price.

It’s a perfect way to show your support for Arizona Coffee, spread the word about your coffee shop or product, or even promote something unrelated to coffee.

Ad sizes and terms

All advertisements must meet my approval, and I reserve the right to edit or reject any advertisement for any reason. You must provide your own banner (175 x 175 pixels JPG, Gif, or PNG).

Thanks again to all of our current sponsors and for your support of Arizona Coffee, and my coffee habit.

Cafe Sierra

December 21, 2009Posted by Chris Tingom

Reader and barista Chris Babbie from Tucson recently visited the Cafe Sierra in Sierra Vista and sent in some photos and information about the place.

Before you stop and think nothing is happening in Sierra Vista, you should know that this shop was in Fresh Cup magazine in February. The article doesn’t really talk about the coffee, but more about the realities of building a coffee shop inside a library.
