New coffee shop opened because it was “better than any other idea” for empty space

September 29, 2010Posted by Chris Tingom

Sam Matatov is opening a new coffee shop in Cave Creek alongside his wife’s barber shop / salon. When asked by the newspaper why he was opening the shop, he answered “coffee was better than any other idea I had.” The new shop is named The Village Coffee Shop.

Prediction: The folks at Village Coffee, a fine establishment in Scottsdale, ask him to change his company name.

Stella’s Coffee House opens in Gilbert

September 28, 2010Posted by Chris Tingom

A new coffee shop has opened in Gilbert, AZ called Stella’s Coffee House. They opened sometime in August and I only first heard about them today, after seeing a mention of their store in the newspaper.

The shop is owned by Don Motz. The shop used to be called Coffee Island, and was apparently purchased by Don and he made a series of improvements.

Just wanted to let everybody know! We’re back in AZ now, after a honeymoon in Hawaii. My wife, Jana, is from Wisconsin, and loves good coffee. I’m now introducing her to the wonderful coffee shops that are home to Arizona.

Papa’s Coffee

September 20, 2010Posted by Chris Tingom

I recently heard from Nick Horten, a barista at Papa’s Coffee which recently opened:

Hi, I’m a Barista at a new coffee shop here in Phoenix. Papa’s Coffee just opened up last week, and we’re located at 5521 N. 7th Ave. We’re inside an Ice Cream shop called Mary Coyle’s, and a few of our drinks incorporate their ice cream into our coffee. We use Coopedota and Tres Generaciones coffee from Coasta Rica. Our hours are 5-10 Monday – Friday and 6-10 Saturday and Sunday. We’re still trying to fine tune everything, but within a few weeks we hope to start an Open Mic Night and an ASU night.

Savaya Coffee Market

September 19, 2010Posted by Chris Tingom

Savaya Coffee Market opened in 2009 in Tucson. It is a combination of coffee shop and coffee education, owned by Burc Maruflu.

The shop came to life with notable murals painted by local artist Jos Villabrille, a long mesquite-wood bar was installed and a six panel chalk board was mounted over the bar. A coffee hobbyist for years, Burc has pursued quality coffee with a passion for the excellent cup. His enthusiasm and love of coffee is exuded through Savaya Coffee Market. Over the past year Savaya has become a gathering place for people with the common interest of drinking great coffee.

Unlimited Coffee has closed

September 19, 2010Posted by Chris Tingom

Unlimited Coffee at 741 E. Glendale Ave. in Phoenix has closed for business. It was by far the most popular uptown Phoenix destination for late-night internet surfers who wanted a coffee fix or gelato.

It’s distinctions were long hours, a very huge conference table in the center of the room, and white leather couches surrounding the walls (they had seen better days). The shop was in an old Pizza Hut, and had the distinctive architecture of one.

When I visit a coffee shop, I bring a friend about a quarter of the time. What about you?

Survey: What are you drinking?

September 7, 2010Posted by Chris Tingom

Just an open question to the community… have your coffee drinking habits changed at all over the last few years? Mine really haven’t, just drinking a lot of cappuccinos and iced coffees this summer. If I know a shop doesn’t have the best coffee, I’ll usually go for the iced coffee.
