Not many coffee shops in Arizona can claim they are closed ’till spring, but the American Flyer Coffee Co. is closed all winter. The shop is located near Route 66 in Williams, AZ and I just happened to see it as I drove past last Saturday.
They roast coffee under the Single Speed Coffee Roaster name. You can learn more, and see pictures on their Facebook profile.

A few months ago I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jim L. Thompson, the franchisee for Dutch Bros. in Arizona. They currently have six locations in Arizona and Jim tells me they’re planning to open at least twenty over the next several years, with the next one planned for Tempe possibly in 2011.

A new coffee shop has just opened up called 32 Shea, and one of the baristas wrote to let me know about it.
Just wanted to send you a note and let you know that a new local coffeeshop opened at 32nd st. and Shea. Full disclosure-I’m one of two baristas. We’re an intercom-less drive-thru and small sit down cafe. We-ve got breakfast sandwiches and lunch fare like salads and made-to-order sandwiches. We brew Matador coffee and make killer nutella mochas. Our Grand Opening is this Saturday, the 12th.

Echo Coffee is hosting a Winter Barista Jam on Saturday, February 19 from 7-10 pm. For details, you can check out this extensive post with information for attendees and competitors.
During the event we will have a latte art competition. All Arizona baristas are invited to attend, participate, and compete. We will have prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. For those wishing to compete, we ask for a modest $5 donation.
The event is being co-sponsored by Echo Coffee, Walter the Bus, and Cortez Coffee.
As part of our continuing effort to combine an educational component for the professional barista, we will be offering a tasting opportunity with the same single original coffee roasted 4 different ways. It’s rare that anyone ever gets to try the same bean roasted differently, and we wanted to cease this event to give people a chance to play “roastmaster” for a night, and decide which roast they think makes the bean shine the best.
