It’s not that surprising. The Sola Coffee Bar location has been serving Cartel’s beans ever since they opened in November, 2009. There have been rumors they were looking for a buyer, and it’s great to hear they will be staying open.
Hey Everyone! We are open in Scottsdale in the current Sola Coffee Bar location! We will be closing down this weekend until Sept 7th when we open as an official Cartel Coffee Lab. Then Friday Sept 9 we are having a big grand opening bash! Come see us at 7124 E 5th Avenue and stay tuned for more info.

Damian Serafine emailed me the other day to let me know about his new coffee shop in the downtown area. He writes:
One Coffee Co, opened 4 months ago at One N. Central, Phx, AZ 85004. I have been in the coffee Business for over 18 years. Actually, Daniel Wayne (Lux, Lola) and I opened the first coffee house downtown Phx! Anyways, would appreciate a listing on your site and you def need to get in here to taste our blend. Yes, I roast, named after my new daughter…Sofia’s Blend.
I can’t remember a time when coffee has been this good in Arizona. It’s now possible to go out and get a really great espresso beverage — and have a choice of where to go. I now have many shops within 15 minutes of my home that I know will serve me an amazing cappuccino. This wasn’t the case 5 years ago.
So, I just wanted to give my AAA+ rating to the people of Arizona for bringing coffee to this level. Congratulations, I think we’ve finally arrived. Here’s to the next 5 years, and great coffee experiences.
Can you believe it’s almost September? And with that brings the SWLAC – Southwest Latte Art Competition on September 3rd at Phoenix Cooks. You may have seen posters, like the one shown here, around town at valley coffee shops.
I wrote about the event recently, but wanted to remind everyone about the event. Tickets are $95 to attend and watch. There’s lots of coffee and food to taste.
I recently wrote about the Seed To Cup mini-series produced by Cartel Coffee Lab. One person who attended put together this little video about the class.
Since you’re all practically family, I’m excited to introduce my new baby daughter. Her name is Emily Ann Tingom, and she was born on 8/18 and baby and mom are healthy.
I’ve been here at the hospital since Wednesday, and they serve Starbucks (sigh, and they even proclaim to serve it proudly, what does that even mean?), so I’m not even going to give them a review except to say the cafeteria food is way better than I expected and I really want some good coffee.
The other night I got out for a brief visit to get a cappuccino at Liberty Market (and dinner), so I’m doing good but looking forward to my next coffee excursion with my little girl.
Speaking of Liberty Market, check out this sweet photo album with some photos of their food.
Do you check-in? There’s Yelp, Foursquare, Facebook Places, Brightkite (does anyone still use it?), Google+ Locations, Gowalla, and probably a hundred other tools for checking into a location. I admit, I’ve tried them all, but only rarely check into a place any longer. I prefer to just tweet my location and a few observations (or a picture).
But, I’m curious how prevalent is usage of location-services in Arizona? Does your favorite coffee shop reward you for your loyalty?
The other day, you may have spotted a clever little site called ‘Jonathan’s Card’ at jonathanstark.com/card/.
It turns out, it’s a marketing campaign from Starbucks (despite many claims to the contrary). Anyways, thought you all would want to know. Kudos to Brian Clemens for the tip.
Brian Clemens, your local BGA representative has a little announcement for valley members. He says “The Barista Guild of America announced today that a benefit of membership is group health insurance. I posted a short blog about the guild and this announcement, but more importantly baristas and coffee professionals can read it for themselves from the BGA.”
Mr. Seth Mills from Cartel Coffee Lab contacted Arizona Coffee this week to let us know about an event they are hosting next week called Seed to Cup: A Coffee Series.
Over three days, they will be be covering topics core to coffee such as coffee farming, roasting, brewing, and aroma and taste. Below is the information Seth sent over, along with a link to register. If you have any questions, you should contact Cartel Coffee Lab.
Ron Cortez’s new coffee shop, dubbed Coffee Wizard, will be opening soon near the ASU campus. I don’t have many details quite yet, but the location is the South East corner of University and McClintock (open 6am-9pm daily). Can’t wait to visit.
The new Lux is opening this month and they’ve updated their web site with a time lapse video showing the construction. The new shop, named Lux Central, opens on Monday, August 8th with expanded hours.
Brosenbrus is a new cafe in Tempe looking to hire Baristas with all levels of training and experience. Steven Gross, the owner, writes: “Currently we are looking to fill several part time positions and are able to work around class/work schedules. If you are interested, please come by the shop and drop off a resume.”
