Arizona Cold Brew

October 3, 2011 Posted by Chris Tingom Filed under Coffee

concentrate coffeeReading this article from Bon Appetit about cold brew iced coffee options (bottled) I was struck with the fact that I haven’t seen any AZ coffee shops or roasters actively sell concentrate cold brew. I wonder why not? On a side note, some of those bottles are beautifully packaged.

I’d like to add: If a local roaster tries this, and the packaging sucks, I will say so. If you want to skimp, I like the idea in the photo.

Actually I think Passport sells cold brew concentrate but wholesale and not intended for retail. Kickstand, Birch, Gradys, and Stubbys (Stumptown) all have different sizes and bottles for retail but are based out of town and Gradys is the only one that delivers, albeit at a high price. Petite Pour will start bottling by end of October, also in a beautifully glass bottle, if I do say so myself.

That’s something I never really thought of, but I think it would require relatively expensive packaging equipment (relative to packaging whole or ground beans). Nitrogen flush plus application of tamper proof seal indicators if for retail sale. Anything less than that and I’d be afraid of what might grow inside it if not kept properly refridgerated. I like the fact they put some kind of date on the bottle with a very visible stamp (can’t quite tell if it’s a roast or use-by date from the image).

We have been experimenting with cold brew method and the final product is refreshing beverage with amazing taste. The matter in fact it makes sense in Arizona to the poitnt that we are investing in bottling equipement and will ready to start retailing next summer, for now we are thinking about using our cold brew in our drive thru. I will keep you guys posted on the progress.
