The Arizona Republic has done a feature on Roadrunner Espresso in Payson. If you’re driving through Payson and want to power up for a day’s worth of hiking or fishing, Road-runner Espresso is the place to stop. The shop, which opened in March, offers sandwiches, muffins and pastries. You can order a deli sandwich any way you like it, choosing from turkey, roast beef or ham, a variety of cheeses and condiments and four types of bread. Sandwiches are $6 ($6.50 for roast beef) and come with chips. If you prefer a hot lunch, try a sandwich fresh from the press. There are six varieties, including the house special Cuban sandwich, with pork, ham, Swiss cheese and pickles for $7. Other hot sandwiches are $6 or $6.50 and also come with chips. But the sandwiches are a bonus, because Roadrunner Espresso makes great coffee. Don’t miss the mocha, either hot or iced. It has just the right amount of chocolate to give a sweet taste while letting the flavor of the coffee come through. The beans are roasted just right, strong but not bitter. The 16-ounce size is $3.50. Finally, what else makes a coffee shop worth stopping for? Friendly people and a welcoming atmosphere. Roadrunner Espresso has comfy couches and chairs up front, plus an area with tables and Wi-Fi in the back. And the efficient baristas seemed genuinely happy to see the customers.
