This just in… The Coffee Plantation’s location in Tempe will be closing at the end of day Saturday, May 30th the Arizona Republic reports.

Through tears, a Tempe Coffee Plantation worker said the Mill Avenue store was closing Saturday.

The shocked worker said she had learned of the closure Friday morning.

Store Manager Cody Peck said the longtime coffee shop that has served generations of downtown Tempe regulars would serve its last cup of coffee tomorrow.

The store is open today until 9 p.m. and shuts its doors permanently tomorrow at the same time.

Thanks for the tip from Chuck.

I cannot express how NOT shocked I am by this news. The only surprise is that it was able to stay open this long. The mill ave location is one of the worst coffee shops in AZ and I don’t say that lightly. I went in on multiple occasions and always overpaid for terrible coffee, lattes, iced mochas from the fridge, etc. I am sorry, but this was originally a great place and needed to be taken over by someone with the slightest bit of passion about coffee. Especially when there are at least 5 coffee shops within walking distance.

  2. Yeah, I concur. I attend a chess meetup at the Scottsdale location every week and nowadays I just get iced tea. Everything is made by depressed and unhappy highschoolers who can’t wait until their shift ends. Besides the coffee, the culture just isn’t where it needs to be.

I loved this place back in the day before they were taken over by Deidrich coffee and several various other people. Kinda sad!!! I heard through the grapevine that a company called 1st Class Concessions signed a contract a while back to open Coffee Plantation stores in the airport, but changed their mind due to the Plantation’s bad reputation. Not sure if it’s true or not but on their website it says they are currently operating Coffee Bean stores. No mention of CP so maybe it’s true.

I heard about this shut down sheesh 2 years ago maybe. They were talking about it then. BUT i also had heard it would be shut down just for a major overhaul as well. I have heard alot of strange stuff related to plantation….

I too am not surprised because I really hated the coffee at CP – always seemed too bitter. But somebody needs to fill the void of a great coffee shop on Mill. Needs to have a lot of places to hang, free wifi, lots of couches as well as tables to work on. I have to think right in the heart of ASU/bar land, a GOOD coffee shop could do wonders.

  6. You should check out Cartel on University and Ash. It maybe isn’t as big and open as CP was but the coffee is top notch and the wifi works.
