Today over lunch we were discussing caffeine. One person from our office has been caffeine-free for about 2 months now and says it’s great. This person used to be a barista and used to have a headache before 10 am if he didn’t get any coffee.

He was obviously addicted.

On the other hand, I don’t notice it. One time a co worker and I downed 8 shots of espresso at 4 pm. I slept great that night and my friend came in the next day exhausted because he couldn’t sleep.

How does espresso affect you and do you purposefully avoid it in the evenings?

  1. I think it depends on the beans used. I like an espresso shot of a good Sidamo or a Ghimbi as an afterdinner drink. Also, a well prepared espresso shot does not seem to have as much caffeine as an ill-prepared shot.

  2. At this point it simply puts me on the level. Caffeine in coffee is much more friendly to me than caffeine in soda. The sugar really messes me up and keeps me awake if I have it late. Coke will kill me, a cappuccino or latte will let me sleep just fine.

  3. The beans are certainly a variable. However, properly extracted espresso has much less caffeine than drip coffee. See Dr. Joseph John’s paper “An Intrinsically Superior Drink”.

I agree that depends on the beans, but if I drink coffee at a late hour its hard for me to get some sleep. I notice that the older I get the less coffee effects my sleep. I notice at my office that people get cranky if they haven’t had coffee.

It is not unusual for me to drink coffee in the evenings right up to 10:30 or 11:00. I may have 4 or 5 cups of coffee from my french press followed by a couple of doubles from my espresso machine. Normally I go to bed around 11:30 or midnight. Only rarely does the coffee keep me up.

I tend to sleep well in general, regardless of whether or not I have coffee in the evening. The same is true when I have a Redbull or four in the evening. However, the downside is multiple trips to the bathroom interrupting what would other wise be my joyous dead-to-the-world slumber.
